When you're in the process of looking for a home, it's common for a buyer to become fixated on a few key things they are looking for and ignore other details. That's why you don't want to overlook these 4 things as a buyer.
Location is key when it comes to real estate, and it's something you may not think much about when you are looking at a listing on a website. Some easy things that you should look out for concerning the location are:
- How close the house is to busy streets or main roads.
- What school district the house is in.
- What the crime rate is like in the area.
- How close the house is to public transportation.
While some of these things may not be important to you, keep in mind that it can have an impact on your home's resale value when it comes time to sell.
Having the amount of bedrooms and bathrooms that you desire is not enough. You must also consider the layout of the home and how it works with your family. A colonial style home often puts the bedrooms on the second floor, keeping them private and separated from the rest of the home. A ranch style home will have all rooms on the same floor. Are there bedrooms right off of the living room? If so, it could cause difficulties in your home when some people are awake and others are trying to sleep
Another thing to look out for is the neighborhood that the house is in. It's something that is really hard to get a read on when you are visiting a home for the first time or looking at an online listing. Don't be shy, and ask a neighbor what they think of the neighborhood. They will be able to give you more insight than you could imagine.
It is worth trying out your commute to see how it compares to what you currently do each day from your current home or apartment. Plan a day where you will drive out to the prospective home's location, and then start heading to work with the plan to be on time. Do you find yourself in horrible traffic? Did it take much longer than anticipated? This could be a valid reason to find a place close to where you work, since you will be driving there almost every day.
